The Binghamton City School District extends its heartfelt appreciation to all those who voted on the proposed capital project to renovate Roosevelt Elementary School. 752 Binghamton residents cast ballots on Tuesday and the proposal passed by a vote of 683-69 – an overwhelming approval of more than 90 percent. The Board of Education accepted a resolution to certify the vote at a special meeting on December 11. You can view the full results here.
The approval by voters is the culmination of more than three years of hard work, collaboration, and planning. Starting with the 2021 feasibility study which identified several needs crucial to the longevity of Roosevelt, such as renovated classrooms, intervention space, and updated security features to name a few. Throughout several community forums that followed in 2022, members of our community provided input, which underlined what was already evident – that Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School is a community hub that is incredibly important for all the families of Binghamton’s north side. The BCSD Board of Education reviewed all feedback and decided at the December 2022 board meeting that the district would work toward securing funding to renovate & rebuild Roosevelt Elementary.
Special thanks are in order for New York State Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo and New York State Senator Lea Webb for their support in securing access to critical state funding. Through language they advocated for and was included in the 2023-24 NYS Budget, BCSD will be able to complete this project in a timely and financially responsible manner. Governor Hochul recognized the importance of this project and signed the budget bill into law.
With approval by district voters, final design and approval of the new Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School will move ahead. Design work is expected to be complete by the end of 2025. Renovations and construction is scheduled to begin in Spring 2026 and is expected to be finished in early 2028. All details related to the project’s timeline will be communicated to families and community members every step of the way.
