A Thanksgiving tradition returns to Binghamton High School this Thursday! Students will welcome hundreds of residents to the school’s cafeteria for the 29th annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner. Meals will be served from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
“Every year we’ve had a great amount of people show up. We’re fortunate to have many volunteers who come and spend their day here. There’s a lot of preparation and I don’t think people realize how much goes into it,” said Binghamton senior Maria Mustafa
Students from National Honor Society organize the free dinner and help prepare and serve the meals; the food is cooked by the High School food services staff. At the end of the day, 200 pounds of turkey, 150 pounds of mashed potatoes, 150 pounds of corn, 150 pounds of stuffing, 65 pounds of cranberry sauce, 50 dozen dinner rolls, and 80 whole pies will be served to some 500 people. A huge undertaking every year, but one that students never hesitate to take on.
“It definitely brings people together, whether you’re working the dinner or coming in to eat. You experience joy and happiness; a lot of people bring their families here instead of staying home and it’s like we’re all one big family,” said Binghamton junior Mary Grace Minor.
The dinner is open to everyone in the community. There is no take out option, but anyone who needs transportation to the dinner can get picked up and dropped off by bus at the following times and locations:
