Colin McGovern

One of our own is in the running for a national scholarship that only a small selection of students across the country achieve!

Binghamton High School senior Colin McGovern has been named a finalist for the National Merit Scholarship, one of the most prestigious academic honors in the country. Each year, approximately 15,000 students nationwide are named finalists, and around 7,500 students receive the scholarship award. The award is a $2,500 scholarship, but more importantly, it serves as a distinguished mark of academic excellence.

To become a National Merit Finalist, Colin demonstrated outstanding academic performance throughout high school, excelling in his International Baccalaureate, Advanced Placement, and Fast Forward classes, among others. Finalists are selected based on their grades, test scores, an application essay, and leadership qualities. The winners of the scholarship will be chosen by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors.

Beyond academics, Colin has been an active leader at Binghamton High School. He has served as ninth grade class president, co-president of the Newspaper Club, and founder of the Medical Club. He is also a proud member of the National Honor Society, Math Honor Scoiety, and Tri-M Music Honor Society, having participated in the BHS music program throughout high school.

Colin McGovernColin's dedication extends to the community, where he tutors students in SAT math and has volunteered for the Binghamton High School Community Thanksgiving Dinner and as a technology assistant at St. Thomas Aquinas Church. Currently, he works as a lifeguard and swim instructor at Guthrie Lourdes Health and Fitness Center and previously worked as a lifeguard for the City of Binghamton.

Colin has won many awards and recognitions throughout high school, including the Rotary Youth Leadership Award and placing first in Central New York and in the top 2% nationally in the Le Grand Concours National French Contest.

The entire Binghamton High School community congratulates Colin on this well-deserved honor and wishes him the best of luck!
