BHS Students Honored in National Merit Scholarship Program
Posted on 11/08/2018

Congratulations to Simon Joyner and Sophia Klin who were honored in the National Merit Scholarship Program this fall. Klin was named a commended student and Joyner was named a semifinalist in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program.

As a commended student, Klin is one of approximately 34,000 students throughout the nation who are being recognized for their exceptional promise. To be chosen for this honor, she had to place among the top 50,000 scores of more than 1.6 million students by taking the preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

As a semifinalist, Joyner, represent less than one percent of high school seniors in the United States. He will continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. Each semifinalist must submit a detailed scholarship application including information about their academic record, participation in school and community activities, leadership abilities, employment and awards received. They must also be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. Joyner will find out in February if he has been chosen to be a finalist.
