Motor labs improve academic success in elementary students
Posted on 02/25/2019
Elementary students in the Binghamton City School District have been skipping, jumping and spinning their way to academic success through the use of motor labs in their schools. The motor lab program was initiated five years ago at Franklin Elementary School. Since then, it has also been added to MacArthur and Roosevelt Elementary Schools and will soon be at Wilson Elementary School. The motor lab consists of nine centers with activities that each stimulate a different section of the brain that is important for development. Research has shown than in only eight weeks using the program, students have shown a 9 percent increase in letter identification, a 7 percent increase in handwriting legibility and a 6 percent increase in academic behaviors.
