New Custom Mobile App ArticleOne of the Binghamton City School district goals is that all stakeholders, will consistently communicate, collaborate and engage with each other. The BCSD new custom mobile app is just one of the ways we are working to improve our communication with our parents, students, staff and community.
There are many ways that we communicate with families in our district. Some of the ways we communicate is through email, letters, our website, social media, traditional media, print newsletters and through automated phone calls. The district decided to look into how our families were getting the information that was being distributed. The data
screen shot of mobile app showed that nearly half of our families were accessing information through a smart phone or mobile device.
This led the district to look into ways to use mobile devices to engage and communicate with our families. If you’ve ever tried to access information from a website on your smart phone, you know that it can be very difficult to navigate and nearly impossible to find key information. With the new BCSD mobile app, all the key information is easily accessible. If a parent needs to call the nurse’s office or send an email to their child’s principal or just wants to see the lunch menu, it’s all at their fingertips.  One of the most important features of the app is the ability to send push notifications that are customized to the user. When initially downloading the app, the user can choose what schools they are interested in receiving push notifications from. So if a parent has a student in elementary school and middle school they can easily choose those schools. The settings can also be changed as
the student grows, graduates or moves to a different school. The push notifications are a great way for the district to be able to engage our families, who might not have the means to have a cell phone plan with text messages or who are worried about data usage. The mobile app works on any smart phone or tablet with wi-fi service.

The push notifications can alert families about weather and emergency-related closings and delays or be simple reminders from the school about an upcoming concert or play.
The app also features, calendars for school events, athletics, or fine art events taking place in the community. There is also a link to the district’s virtual backpack, where parents and guardians can find information about programs, afterschool events or camps in the community that might interest their children.
The app is a pared down version of the district website, that families can use to easily access information and get connected. We are excited to be able to offer this service to our district and are excited about the ability to be able to keep our families better informed. To download this free app, go to the Apple store or Google play and search Binghamton City School Dist.
