New Students

Information for New Students

If you are a new student, welcome! We look forward to having you with us in the Binghamton City School District. 

New Registrants: 
  1. Families new to the Binghamton City School District (or returning to Binghamton) must come to Central  Registration at 98 Oak Street, Binghamton. 

  2. General education students requesting registration at Binghamton High School will be required to meet with a Binghamton High School Guidance Counselor prior to registration. Administration will be called in to meet with student/families as needed.
  3. Parents/Guardians will present proof of residency, custody papers, permanent records (grades, attendance, discipline), and other pertinent documentation required for registration.  Questions in regard to custody and residency issues will be addressed through the Office of Pupil Services and Attendance.
  4. Parents of student’s requiring English as Second Language will complete the Home Language questionnaire as part of the registration packet.  The initial screening process will take place at the building they are assigned to. 
  5. After registering students in School Tool:
  • Registrar will email principal, counselor clerical personnel that child has been registered in that building with a projected enrollment date. Registrar will scan registration information to the respective building(s) and give a projected enrollment date.
  • It is communicated to the family that buildings  get 24 hours’ notice for their student to start.  If the registration information is entered into the system before 9 a.m., families are told they can call the building the next day for an official start date.  Registration information input after 9 a.m., families are informed to call the building for an official start time in two days. 
  • Registrar will fax a Request for Records instructing previous school to send school records to students new school building or to Pupil Services if required documents are still needed. 
  • All registration paperwork will be forwarded to the receiving building.
  • Buildings will email to Registrar for the elementary level, homeroom number, teacher and start date if change is needed from projected enrollment date given.
  • Buildings share medical information with school nurse as soon as possible.  School nurse will flag student’s record of any required medical alert as needed.
  • Central Registration makes every attempt to give school buildings 24 hour notice for students to begin.
  • It is communicated to the family that buildings (teachers) get 24 hours’ notice for their student to start.  If the registration information is entered into the system before 9 a.m., families are told they can call the building the next day for an official start date.  Registration information input after 9 a.m., families are informed to call the building for an official start time in two days.  

To register, you will need to complete our Registration Form and provide the following documents and information:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Social Security Card
  • 2 Proofs of Residency - lease, rent receipt, utility bill, any other acceptable proof
  • Custody papers (if applicable)
  • Immunization records
  • Final report card or final transcript and withdrawal grades
  • I E P (if applicable)

Students with limited English language proficiency must also complete our Home Language Questionnaire form.

It is the PARENT/GUARDIAN'S responsibility to provide the above documents. We will assist you in obtaining your school records by faxing a release of records form, which you have signed, to the former school. Please note that registration cannot be completed until the above documents have been received.

The Binghamton City School District cannot be held responsible for the previous school's failure to respond in a timely manner.
