Sex Offender Seen Near Roosevelt
April 18, 2018
Dear Parents/Guardians:
I have been informed that a registered sex offender has been seen in the vicinity of Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School and Chenango Street. The Binghamton Police Department and our faculty and staff have been made aware of the situation and will be vigilant in reporting anyone who is acting suspiciously around our schools. In addition, we have recently added a district web site link entitled Community Safety Alerts where parents can search and view Broome County’s complete offenders list to stay better informed.
The safety and welfare of our students is always our top priority. I encourage you to take this opportunity to review general safety practices with your children. This is additionally important as we approach the summer months when daily schedules and supervision may be changing. These practices include:
• Be aware of his or her surroundings and of avoid contact with any strangers in any situation outside of school.
• Use the buddy system at bus stops and while walking to and from school.
• Never go anywhere with anyone unless your parents know who you are going with and where you are going.
• Know your address and phone number.
• If you are playing with friends at a park or other location and they leave, leave with your friends.
• Try to always walk places with friends.
• In any emergency, call 9-1-1.
• Children should never be embarrassed to tell their parents, the police and their teachers or administrators about something they observed or that happened they think was not right. Encourage your children, “If you see something, say something.”
Sincerely,
Tonia Thomspon Ed.D.
